Energy-efficient home design begins before choosing air conditioners, solar panels or smart devices. Early architectural decisions can reduce heat gain and make every later system easier to size and operate.
Study the sun path, prevailing wind, neighboring buildings and landscape. Position rooms and openings to balance daylight, privacy and heat. Deep eaves, external shading and suitable glazing can reduce direct solar gain.
The roof receives substantial heat during the day. Insulation, reflective strategies, ventilated roof spaces and careful detailing can improve indoor comfort. Doors, windows and service penetrations should also be coordinated to reduce uncontrolled air leakage.
Cross-ventilation can be valuable when outdoor temperature and air quality are suitable. During hot or polluted periods, occupants may need to close openings and rely on efficient cooling or filtration. A flexible operating strategy is more practical than assuming one mode will work all year.
