A new home cannot remove the regional haze, but its layout, envelope, ventilation and daily operation can make indoor air easier to manage. This guide turns that everyday concern into practical design questions—without claiming that any house is completely PM2.5-proof.
This guide combines official public-health and building guidance with design decisions that can be discussed early with your architect and engineer. The goal is simple: give the household more control over indoor air while keeping the home comfortable and energy-conscious.
Use the Pollution Control Department’s Air4Thai service to check current conditions. When outdoor air improves, selected windows and shaded openings can support natural cross-ventilation. When PM2.5 is high, the operating strategy should change: close unnecessary openings, reduce air leakage and use filtered recirculation or a correctly selected portable air cleaner.
This “mixed-mode” approach matters in Northern Thailand. Natural ventilation is valuable for comfort and energy saving, and Thailand’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency discusses cross-ventilation in residential design. However, opening the whole house during a pollution episode may bring outdoor particles inside. The house therefore needs both a good-air-day mode and a haze-day mode.

Use an entry zone or vestibule where practical, and separate the kitchen, garage and utility areas from sleeping spaces. The objective is not to seal the home blindly; it is to make air movement intentional and manageable.
Shading, insulation, reflective roof strategies and passive cooling can reduce heat gain, helping the home stay comfortable when windows must remain closed. These measures should be matched to the orientation, roof form, landscape and lifestyle of each project.
During haze periods, avoid smoking or vaping indoors, burning incense or candles, and using high-heat cooking without effective extraction. Cooking hoods should discharge safely outdoors and should not pull smoke back into the house. Choose low-emission finishes where possible and store strong chemicals away from living areas.
An indoor air-quality monitor can help residents understand when conditions change, but it is a guide rather than a medical device. Position sensors away from direct purifier airflow, open windows and cooking steam. Create a simple maintenance schedule for cleaning pre-filters, replacing filters, checking seals and servicing air-conditioning equipment. Keep replacement filters available before the seasonal haze begins.
